Are We Losing

An auditory and visual fusion by one of Melbourne's finest emerging artist's.

Aurelia

The files were lost for Aurelia’s debut release Are We Losing, and as a result, all that remained was a first bounce of an idea. An idea that was never meant to be released. But with a story as unique as its sound, having been created without the use of any musical instruments or beats, the fabric of the recording instead woven by combining Aurelia’s vocal samples with the recorded sounds or her practising her Martial Arts, it is truly a work of beauty. It’s the purity of the circumstance that provoked Aurelia’s decision to swim upstream and release the initial whisperings of an immaculate rumination.

The next evolution of this unbridled expression of art comes in the form of an unassuming visual masterpiece. The video for ‘Are We Losing’ is a brilliantly coloured synaptic orgy, replete with the kind of psychedelic incandescence that is usually only found at the bottom of a cup of ayahuasca somewhere deep in the jungles of Peru.

The production of the music and the video are interlinked by the LA underground indie pop duo masterminds ‘Souvik’, half Justin Byrne, half Gavin Beasley. Justin, along with his brother Jeremy Byrne and Aurelia’s long time partner in crime, the songwriter known as Thrones, came together in a musical vortex to create with Aurelia the magical recording that is the ‘Are We Losing’ demo. Aurelia says it was imperative that the visuals for ’Are We Losing’ encapsulated and imparted the songs sense freedom and abandon and that it was reflective of the intimate dialogue that comes through in the songwriting. She fleshed out this vision with videographer Gavin, who's meticulous eye for synergy and connection is apparent in every frame of this unadulterated visual experience, and with acute attention to the musicality of the track, the visual expression is effortlessly cohesive and precise.

The video features two mesmerising dancers, the ineffable Jason Williams and breathtaking Martha Nichols, who play out, with shakespearean intensity, the tos and fros of a love had, and lost… One of the notable scenes is a raucous cameo from LA underground club stalwart, and icon of equality, the marvellous Ms. Gracie Odoms.

With undeniable vulnerability, Aurelia sings the somewhat rhetorical question ‘Are We Losing?’, in a way that makes it impossible to not also partake in the asking… Are we? The irony is, from the response, the answer seems to be a resounding ‘no’.

Are We Losing is the sound of the independent female artist and fearless creative powerhouse that is Aurelia.

Aurelia has pursued, with unparalleled clarity, the perfect execution of her artist’s vision, and has managed to pull together, for that purpose, a motley crew of fantastical characters for the sonic and visual creation of her work.
