BEN WRIGHT SMITH

STORM BOY

The Melbourne songwriter has been a strong favorite with live music fans over the years and as a recording artist, making waves both in Australia and overseas too - his songwriting has continued to flourish off the back of his acclaimed 2017 debut album ‘The Great Divorce’. Ahead of his latest release Storm Boy, Ben Wright Smith shares with Musicology his favorite Melbourne indie acts.

GIRLATONES

The Girlatones are the coolest band upcoming in town for me. Fun grungy pop songs that totally rule. One of my other favorite singers Leah Senior also plays in this band and it’s always fun to see her in full rock mode. These guys record all their music at home and keep evolving every time I see them. Jesse’s songs always make me smile and are always perfect for a goofy dance party.

CREPES

I’ve loved this band for ages and they were one of the reasons we decided to work with their producer Dave Turner. Their first EP Cold Summers was so cool and they’re first album ‘Channel Four’ was awesome too. I don’t really know how they make it all sound so effortless but as a band they’re air tight.

COLD SUMMERS

THE PRETTY LITTLES

These guys have to be one of the most prolific bands around. Jack is a machine song-writer and this band is always so fun to go watch. I don’t know how they fit it in but they have toured so much of the country and were a big inspiration for me to get off my butt and just start doing it. They’re about to bring out a new record and have managed to build up a nice big following of beleibers which is totally earned and awesome.

PRIDE

COUSIN TONY'S BRAND NEW FIREBIRD

We played with Cousin Tony’s Brand New Firebird and their live show is fucking awesome at the moment. These guys keep putting out great new music and their first album ‘Electric Brown’ was on heavy rotation during our last tour around Australia.

MELBOURNE BITTER

THE TERRIFYING LOWES

This is the project from my friend Tyler who plays bass in my band too. He’s just brought out one song so far but has plenty more music coming out and its really cool. Super fun pop-rock music a little akin to our friend Ali Barter. He plays bass for her too and is an absolute shred lord. His songs are very touching as well.

COOL WITH IT
