CARAVÃNA SUN

come back

Raucous indie surf rockers Caravãna Sun have just released their latest single Come Back. A heartfelt ode to a lost friend; a bridge between this world and the next. Alex Dumbrell of Caravãna Sun takes the time out to speak with Musicology and share their ultimate experiences. Providing an insight in the bands adventures on and off the road as well as around Australia and the world.

madness

Last year, we had the true pleasure of supporting UK Ska heavyweights, Madness. Our first show was in Western Australia, at a sold out Fremantle Arts Show.

Sitting at Sydney airport anxiously excited and ready to go, our flight gets delayed, and delayed, and delayed until eventually, it’s cancelled. With only one seat available on the only flight, we had pleaded with check in until 3 of us managed to squeeze onto the flight. We arrived with no instruments, no bags and 30 mins to the show. With borrowed instruments, we stood in front of 4000 people doing semi acoustic versions of our songs. That night, we ended up back with the boys from madness reminiscing on a truly epic day!

la brass banda

Our German brothers La Brass Banda, have sown the seeds for some incredible tales. After a brief shared beer side of stage 3 years ago with bassist Fabi, we spoke briefly about touring through Germany with these legends. Now after 2 summers and whole bag of blurry Bavarian memories, we’ve played some of the biggest shows of our life. Connected with some of the most open and supportive crowds and danced into the night among one of the best live acts in the world.

lord howe island

Seven years ago, we decided to call the band Caravãna Sun. We received a random email about playing a show in Lord Howe Island. The three of us were green and keen for new experiences so before we knew it, we were crammed into a small Cessna plane and flown over from port Macquarie. Upon landing, we could spot turtles and dolphins from the plane, eluding to some sort of tropical paradise. Over the next 4 days, we played every night for a local restaurant and ran rings around the island soaking up every moment we could. These early memories of the band really formed the relationships and close bond we now have and cherish years down the track. Lord Howe Island will forever be etched into my memory as the Caravãna Sun maiden voyage!

bardi country

We’ve been very fortunate to spend some time up on Bardi Country with the incredible mob that call that place home. Three hours north of Broome, we make the annual pilgrimage to this truly moving place to experience, reflect and sow the seeds of our music. Each trip we make a point of heading out on country with good mate and local law Man Terry Jnr Hunter. We search rocks for mud crab and tell rich tales of ceremony and tradition that form the connection to such an incredible land. Conversations with Terry Jnr are vividly sprawled across my eyes with every thought of the Kimberley. As the sun sets each time in a truly astounding way, I’m reminded of just how lucky we are to experience this beautiful place and hold these story’s close to our hearts.

portugal love

We are truly so grateful for the love Portugal has bestowed on the band. We now have a solid family that lives close to Lisbon who without a doubt, have a long lasting legacy within the Caravãna Sun story. Heading down to the Algarve coast, we string together boat loads of laughter, singing our way all the way to the festival. Scheduled to start at 10:30pm, we waited back stage in an old boat nestled right next to the Atlantic Ocean. In true Portuguese style, things were running late and we ended up starting at 3:00am in the morning. Just as the sun was on the rise, the power cut out and we were left with just our acoustic instruments and voices to hold the crowd. That was one incredibly lose Portuguese night I’ll probably never remember fully.
