MELBS BB
Dreamy singer-songwriter Melbs bb has today announced her new single Astrology (clothesline), a catchy pastel fantasy with a dark, edgy underside. Otherwise known as Erica Lilly, the track sweeps up everything in its wake and envelops like a wave, prompting a feeling of deep comfort and movement in the listener; in other words, it might be the perfect soundtrack to that dark, warm drive home from a summer holiday – kinda melancholy, but acutely liberating, too.
Lilly’s fascination with astrology extends beyond the namesake of the single and she shares exclusively with Musicology her thoughts of other artists and their astrological signs.
Aries
Titanic (feat. Rich Brian) - Jackson Wang What could be more Aries than writing a whole song about stealing your girlfriend? Maybe you’re in a happy relationship?? Maybe your GF doesn’t want a piece of Jackson Wang?? No, typical Aries here to wreak havoc.
Taurus
Juice - Lizzo A bit old-school (dated even) but most importantly, unapologetic. I’ve never heard an apology from a Taurus. Slacker anthem Viceroy by Mac DeMarco was a close second. It was VERY close.
Gemini
Real Friends - Kanye West A song about calling yourself a terrible friend/family member/person whilst simultaneously slinging mud at friends/family members/people. Why you gotta be like that Gemini? Honourable mention: My My My by Troye Sivan because Troye has 110% of that Gemini charm.
Cancer
Needy - Ariana Grande Yes, they are.
Leo
Porsche (feat. MØ) - Charli XCX An under appreciated Charli (who is SUCH a Leo) tune about being broken up with and getting revenge by buying an expensive car to drive around looking cool in. As a Pisces, all I have to say is pull your head out of your arse, Charlotte.
Virgo
Late Night Feelings (feat. Lykke Li) - Mark Ronson Look the obvious choice is Beyonce but guess who else is born on her birthday? Well it’s bloody Mark Ronson now isn’t it?! A song about keeping your feelings unavailable till you’re alone at night which is very Virgo indeed.
Libra
Serendipity - BTS I didn’t want to clog up this list with too much BTS but Jimin, who is the ultimate Libra, has the ultimate Libra solo track. All of my Libra friends under their neatly presented exteriors are secretly huge romantics and this tune is the most sickly romantic piece of work ever. Stunning.
Scorpio
Drew Barrymore - SZA A classic emo SZA song complaining about being in a dysfunctional relationship but then talking about all her faults and why she deserves her romantic woes. Also don’t let all the moping let you think for a minute she wouldn’t cut you. The only thing that isn’t Scorpio about this song is that she released it to the public.
Sagittarius
Bellyache - Billie Eilish The right answer to this is Bad Guy but I don’t want to piss anyone off so I’ve gone with the one where she talks about that time she killed some of her friends for no reason because impulse control is not something Sagittarians are known for.
Capricorn
Dang! (feat. Anderson .Paak) - Mac Miller A song begging a lover to come back after prioritising work over them for the entirety of your relationship. Very Capricorn productivity vibes. RIP Mac.
Aquarius
Falling - Harry Styles I mean the whole song is him having an existential crisis. I don’t think it gets more Aquarius than that. (Though the song isn’t, the video for Adore You is very Aquarius).
Pisces
See You Again (feat. Kali Uchis) - Tyler, The Creator Pisces king Tyler making the ultimate Pisces tune about daydreaming and having a crush. If you need more dreamy vibes, Trivia: Seesaw by Suga of BTS was my original choice.
Lilly has also released a sharp, self-made video to accompany the song, lovingly poking fun at the stereotypes of the signs of the zodiac. The video for Astrology (clothesline) is a comical and witty look into the traits of each astrological sign. Clever and incisive, with a sweet DIY charm, this video includes something for everyone, and each viewer is sure to feel uncomfortably ‘seen’ at some point throughout! Reflecting on the process of creating the video. Melbs bb will be launching Astrology (clothesline) at a very special show at the Workers Club in Melbourne on February 27.
