SHIVA & THE HAZARDS

ReVIEW

The lead single Angkor Wat has just landed and Musicology takes a listen to the track before it is road tested across Australia this month.

SHIVA & THE HAZARDS

Having received glowing praise here locally from institutional heavyweights, Triple J and abroad from the likes of Gary Crowley, BBC Radio London Music, it is little surprise that Shiva and the Hazards have secured the covenanted support duties for indie legends RIDE on their upcoming Australia and New Zealand tour.

Ahead of their epic tour Musicology takes time out to listen to the latest offering, Angkor Wat, the band’s first follow up since their debut EP, Future Cult Classics, which was released only last year. Having previously worked with formidable producer Chris potter (The Verve, The Rolling Stones), and RIDE front man Mark Gardener, the swirling guitars that feature on Angkor Wat nod to these shoegaze heavy hitters.

Opening amidst an oscillating reverb, the track tumbles into view with Douglas Hinds gravely vocals jockeying for pole position. The solid percussive backbone anchors the wavering guitar layers, holding them steady as Angkor Wat swaggers to its own pace.

A rich texture and intricate arrangement, the single bodes well for an outfit who is resolutely taking the U.K alt rock baton with both hands and are ready to run their own race as firm favourites for Australia’s next greatest export.
