Continents
Before heading to SXSW next month, Hembree give us a taste of things to come with their new single.
Hembree
Kansas City's Hembree is happy to share their new single " Continents" which is taken off the French label Kitsuné's new America 5, The NBA Edition compilation, out today. "Continents" is Hembree's first new song since the release of their debut EP Had It All last November on Ribbon Music. Perhaps their best work yet, Hembree's Isaac Flynn notes "with "Continents" I was feeling somewhat isolated.
I'm an extroverted person, and I feel with that personality type there's an expectation to always be upbeat and positive. The lyrics deal with me feeling down and realizing that no one else was aware of what I was feeling. I'm calling out for help in "Continents". The lyrics are pretty dark, but the song is upbeat and poppy. I've always loved the juxtaposition of those two things in music."
On the heels of today's single, Hembree will be headed to SXSW next month with dates to be announced soon.
There is no denying Hembree's upward trajectory. 2017 saw Hembree share the hard-hitting single "Holy Water" which landed in the top 50 at Alternative Radio. They supported the likes of Phoenix, Cold War Kids and Elvis Costello and found a fan in Zane Lowe who debuted both "Holy Water" and "Had It All." Capping the year, the band were included on NPR's 20 Bands To Watch in 2018. More recently, "Holy Water" was featured in Apple's HomePod ad which debuted during the Grammys.
Hembree's path to success is proving to be as nostalgia-inducing as it is powerful: labor away at home and in fly-by-night studios creating music you love; send your song to the local DJ (yes, on the actual radio) and have him love it so much he plays it immediately; tour and tour and tour and tour and tour; and begin to hear that song on radio stations across the country, acting as early beacons to the larger world taking notice. Their sound - smart, tightly constructed rock songs with stick-in-your-head hooks and soaring vocals - place Hembree at the forefront of a new generation of inspired and ambitious bands.
