TWICE

I only discovered Little Dragon recently, and when I heard this song it swallowed me, and I had to listen twice. Yukimi Nagano is such a captivating singer. I love how stripped back the production is - just two chords, a simple and repetitive piano part, some sparse electronic soundscape snippets, bass and strings. The song feels huge and beautiful, and is surprisingly mega catchy.

AIR BETWEEN US

There is a choir in this song! And they sing so percussively and chordally. The syncopation of the choir and drums over a really simple bass line make this song bob along in such a cruisey and funky way. Mama Kin Spender are a band featuring Danielle Caruana and Tommy Spender, and they each sing a verse in this song. I love how I’m left wanting to hear more verses, probs why I put it on repeat! However, playing this song on repeat went to new levels when I put it on a spotify playlist at work and my colleague Matt skipped it back not twice, but four times one morning! It would have been awkward if it wasn’t such a great song.

TENSION

I first heard Tension in the tour van last year. My brother was playing the song on the stereo, and I didn’t realise it was Kira. I was blown away by what an amazing pop singer she is, and what a freaking killer song this is, it MAKES me dance. The bass does this slide thing that is sooo sexy. Check out the awesome film clip as well, featuring the most gorgeous and daggy guy.

THE CHAIN

The opening line ‘Listen to the wind blow’ with it’s big epic harmonies is such a strong beginning. I love the mix of sounds and styles in this song. At times it sounds like a blues and roots swampy jam, then mixed with a Dolly Parton country/pop song vibe and into a rock-out chorus with a driving bass rhythm and electric guitar. It does all of this without ever sounding dis-jointed. I’m a sucker for a song featuring multiple singers. The chorus of this one has a canon going on between the shared vocals that keeps going round and round, I think this already sets up the idea of playing it on repeat!

MY LOVERS

I heard this song for the first time when TomGirl played at a party we were hosting in a warehouse in Coburg. All five band members sing, and switch between their different instruments. They are so entertaining to watch and listen to. The bongos and dreamy, whispy flute add so much sultry funky goodness to this song, along with the effect of five vocalists all singing the chorus together. The lyrics are about multiple lovers and the simple but sexy things they do, and the love that interconnects them all. I love how it’s a love song breaking the paradigm of monogamous love that is written about in most songs!
